Bud Zone Bar & Moz Metal Column Covers

The Project

An exciting project located inside the Jacksonville Jaguars “Alltel” Stadium — home to the NFL’s Jacksonville Jaguars — the BudZone Bar offered architects and Móz Designs opportunity for creative engineering. The architects envisioned transforming the supporting columns at the job site into kiosks that would function as “light boxes” presenting sports-related graphic displays. The internally illuminated encasements would also serve as accents to highlight the columns within the space. Originally a sub-contractor had been designated to build the enclosures using Móz decorative metals. However, it quickly became apparent that Móz was better equipped to engineer, build and install the metal column covers as conceptualized.

The Challenges and Solutions…

Tricky field conditions and a tight deadline required coordinating closely with the other sub-contractors to fabricate easy to install metal custom covers. The expansion joints and building floor intersected the supporting columns in a way that would in turn cause the metal column covers to eventually break apart during structural shifts. To prevent this and establish functional integrity, Móz anchored the two-part cover to one side of the expansion joint to offset potential splitting. Another issue was constructing graphic display windows for several columns that provided easy access. Incorporating side panel doors for adjusting electrical panels and control boxes was the answer. Wire management was achieved by nesting the entire electrical system inside the encasements, out of view.

The Results…

Warm and inviting, the finished metal column covers create an interactive focus for the bar. The thematically related effect of their tapering oval shape and dramatic backlit amber colored metal suggests beer steins. Heightening the illusion is the surface material’s rippling liquid grain.
